(Boxing News) Anthony Fitzgerald looks to settle ‘Unfinished Business’
Anthony Fitzgerald has called on Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Promotions to allow him the opportunity of setting the record straight with Dungiven slugger Eamonn O Kane on the undercard of the Carl Frampton - Kiko Martinez European title fight at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on February the 9th.
Following his contentious Prizefighter defeat to eventual winner O’Kane at the Kings Hall in Belfast a little over eight months ago, the Dubliner is adamant he deserves another crack at O Kane on the February bill that is ironically titled ‘Unfinished Business’”.
“It’s no secret that a lot of people ringside the night myself and Eamonn fought believed it was a hometown decision, no disrespect to Eamonn he is a really nice guy but he didn't beat me, I handled everything he threw at me and felt I was only getting going when the fight was over”.
“Eddie Hearn has called the February show “Unfinished Business” because the Carl Frampton – Kiko Martinez fight kept falling through, but that fight hasn't started to be unfinished, but Anthony Fitzgerald v Eamonn O Kane is certainly something that needs to be concluded, we only got three rounds out of the way, we need to get this fight finished” said the Dubliner.
Former WBF Intercontinental and EBA middleweight champion Fitzgerald was delighted to have participated in the Prizefighter tournament he feels was perfectly suited to the style of the former Commonwealth Gold Medalist. Fitzgerald advocates the fact that while O Kane held all the aces in terms of being the hometown fighter along with the tournaments amateur type format, he still needed the luck of the dealer to get the decision.
“I really appreciated Eddie Hearn giving me the opportunity to fight on the Belfast Prizefighter, it was only my second fight in over fifteen months and I jumped at the opportunity. But the truth is we are professional boxers, not three round fighters. Prizefighter suited Eamonn not me and still he needs a dig-out from the judges”.
Following O Kane’s first professional defeat last Saturday night against John Ryder in a British Middleweight Title Eliminator, Fitzgerald is further convinced he would outgun O Kane should they meet again while also suggesting John Ryder would also find his to hot to handle should they ever cross paths.
“Eamonn is not comfortable going beyond four or five rounds; sure Joe Rae took him eight and look what happened him last weekend against john Ryder. Again without wanting to sound disrespectful I would really fancy myself against both of them, having seen them on Saturday night, neither would bother me over eight, ten or twelve rounds”.
Currently training under the watchful eye of two times European Bronze Medalist Philip Sutcliffe at the Crumlin Boxing Club, Fitzgerald is confident Eddie Hearn has his contact details and is hoping to hear from someone at Matchroom promotions within the coming days.
“Eddie knows where I am, he contacted me regarding Prizefighter so I’m sure he can manage it again without to much bother, just get in touch with one of my team and lets get this sorted. There is no point in O Kane looking at this title and that title when he wont even prove himself domestically, I'm here, ready and more then willing to travel into his backyard to him to fight his within the professional boxing format where he cant totally rely on the judges to pull him through”.
